INTRODUCTION.
It is hardly necessary to say that this is a Catalogue ot more than a single collection.
As one, whatever credit it might deserve on the ground of variety, it would lose on that of incongruity ; but this is an objection without much force against a catalogue of miscel- laneous articles offered for public sale.
That there are several owners in the case, may explain why the catalogue is divided into so many parts and acldendas ; also why coins of the same class are not sold under one head.
Part I. is composed wholly and exclusively of the collec- tion of Mr. Joseph E. Gay, of New York; and the other gentlemen interested in the sale, will, I am sure, cordially concede that it richly deserves the distinction of being placed at the head. Among the Scotch and English pieces in this collection, are some that will hardly be looked for in a cata- logue so unexpected as this will be, and from a cabinet so quietly formed and little known.
In the addendum to Part I., and in Part II. of the Catalogue, many fine coins and medals, both American and foreign, will be found, and collectors will do well to examine this depart- ment of the Catalogue with care.
Part III. consists almost wholly of ancient and modern gems, antiquities from Egypt, Bric-a-Brac, and minerals. There are also many good coins in this division, as well as in the addenda to Part II. This will be the last, and by no means the least interesting and important day of the sale. Among the gems are several fine stones ; the minerals came

from a good collection, and are fit to go into good collections again ; the antiquities from Egypt are authentic and valuable. I do not know that we are at liberty to state publicly the facts respecting them, but the writer can do so with propriety in a private way, and besides, exhibit other objects of great value and quite unique, from the same source.

29 John, 1199-1216; head in a triangle, IOIIANNES
EEX ; rev. crescent and stars in a triangle, KOBERT OX DIVAE ; very fine and rare penny.
James Simon and Henry Noel Humphreys both give us an account of the triangle on this coin, but they do not agree. Simon says he finds heads similarly inclosed on the coins of Biorno, King of Sweden, A.D. 818, and on several of the Kings of Prance from 893 to 1322 ; he mentions as examples, coins of Charles the Simple, Philip the Fair, and Charles the Fair ; therefore, he con- cludes that as the King’s head was inclosed in a circle on English money, for distinction he would be represented in a triangle on his Irish coins, particularly as they were now for the first time of the same weight and standard. Simon believes that the harp, which at a later period became the chief symbol of Ireland, was suggested by and proceeded from the triangle, as it was unknown on any coin of that or a former period, now extant.
Mr. Humphreys says without hesitation, “ The triangle found on these coins is supposed to be a symbol of the Trinity — the an- cient arms of Trinity Priory in Ipswich being represented in a similar manner.” The triangle was continued on the Irish coins of Henry III. and Edward I., II., and III., when it disappears.
30 Half-penny, full face in a circle, JOI1ANXES DO

These fine and rare bronzes -were executed by one of the great artists of the loth century, who revived in Italy the forgotten art of the medallests. Vittor Pisano, Matteo d’Paste, and others, founded a school, where they modelled profile heads of illustri- ous men and women, adorning the reverses with designs of admirable workmanship in relief. The Carrara medals seldom appear in European, and until quite recently, never in American catalogues.
